What is argan oil?


Argan oil or argane is extracted from an ancestral tree present mainly in the south-west of Morocco, between the cities of Agadir, Taroudant and Essaouira.

History

Real heritage of Morocco, the argan tree and its famous argan oil has become an emblem of the southern regions of Morocco.

The Berber populations settled in the Maghreb for centuries used it in gastronomy and cosmetics, before that, the Phoenicians used it as fuel for oil lamp.

Quality of cosmetic argan oil

It is true that a quality argan oil must be light in color and odorless. It can also seem cloudy, which does not alter its composition but on the contrary, can be the sign of a homemade.

The oil must be odorless and light yellow in color. If an unpleasant odor is felt, you can deduce that it was made using kernels of poor quality.

In addition, conditioning can affect the color of the oil. Glass vials will lighten the oil unlike plastic containers. Note that it is better to be wary of non-transparent bottles, not allowing to see the color of the oil.

Specificities of argan oil


Regarding the cosmetic oil, it applies to the skin and / or hair and has scientifically proven virtues against many ailments.

It is indicated and recommended when the skin is dehydrated, devitalized or tired. It acts against the aging of the skin by accelerating its regeneration process by its antioxidant effects.

Argan oil is ideal for acne or chickenpox and other skin inflammations such as dermatitis or various mild burns. You can use it if your hands or lips are chapped, or when your nails are brittle.

Zoubida Charrouf, researcher at the University of Rabat, specialized in organic chemistry, has greatly helped in the scientific recognition of this oil has become one of the most expensive oils in the world, but also to other products from the argan.


With the help of IDRC (International Development Research Center, a Canadian Crown corporation), it has succeeded in establishing and developing the first women's argan oil production co-operatives exclusively managed and run by women. .

Argan and Morocco
In 2009, cooperatives in Morocco producing argan oil or argan-derived products employ 3,000 people, mostly women.
The production capacity is between 2,500 and 4,500 tons per year.
850,000 hectares of argan trees exist, but the country faces a decrease in this area each year.


Note that a tree can produce 15 to 35 kilos of fruit a year.
